‘Masterclass in low budget sci-fi’ TLOU fans should see | Films | Entertainment
A ‘masterclass in low budget sci-fi’ is a film that all fans of The Last of Us series are urged to discover.
Prospect, a lesser-known indie movie, is currently up for grabs without costing you a penny.
At present, this intriguing flick is exclusively available on Tubi, where viewers can indulge without even having to sign up.
Sharing the spotlight with HBO’s hit series through lead actor Pedro Pascal, the film echoes with comparable themes within its core narrative.
According to its synopsis, we follow a father-daughter duo as they venture out to collect valuable gems on a foreign moon.
But their quest swiftly escalates into a desperate battle for survival, all while the daughter grapples with her father’s insatiable greed , reports Surrey Live.
Joining Pascal is Sophie Thatcher of ‘Heretic’ and ‘Yellowjackets’ fame, alongside Jay Duplass, renowned more for his directorial collaborations with brother Mark Duplass on movies like Cyrus and Jeff, Who Lives At Home.
A standout success among critics, Prospect boasts a stellar 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It continues to earn accolades, with Slash Film advocating it as an “overlooked sci-fi movie you need to watch after The Last Of Us.”
Viewers seem to share a similar sentiment, as evident from the numerous positive reviews online. A fan who’s seen the film raved about its qualities, stating: “I love this movie. He (Pedro Pascal) is amazing – some sort of Shakespearean space cowboy. Sophie Thatcher is great, the world building is really good and the soundtrack is chef’s kiss – I have it on all the time. Love the track in the final scene.”
Interestingly, some enthusiasts have drawn parallels with the initial reception of the 1977 classic ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’. A user elaborated: “This film is like if they had just made Star Wars today, but for the first time with current sensibilities.”
They continued to sing the film’s praises, describing it as “It’s amazing; subtle, engaging, with the deepest most thorough tactile universe I’ve seen since. Big action and scope is replaced with intimate situations traversing dangers of a world that is just out of reach of our own. Both totally alien and completely relatable. A hidden gem with an outstanding soundtrack/score that I truly hope finds its cult audience and the credit it deserves.”
Another reviewer echoed this sentiment, appreciating how the film combines science fiction and western elements. They wrote: “Best described as a Sci-Fi Western this is a great little film. The sets, costumes, cinematography and music are better than a $3 million dollar budget should allow. The acting is awesome with newcomer Sophie Thatcher holding her own against veteran scene stealer Pedro Pascal.”
One individual remarked: “This film is fantastic. Beautifully written characters underpinned by amazing performances from Sophie Thatcher and Pedro Pascal. I adore the world-building, the money is in all the right places and it’s really just a masterclass in low-budget sci-fi.”
Prospect is streaming on Tubi.
