Myles Lewis-Skelly has reportedly been placed on Manchester United’s transfer shortlist for the summer. The Arsenal academy product shot to prominence last season when establishing himself as the regular starter in the side’s left-back position. But his playing time has been reduced significantly since the summer loan signing of Piero Hincapie from Bayer Leverkusen alongside Riccardo Calafiori.

Hincapie’s loan is set to become permanent in the summer. Sky Sports claim that, alongside Nathaniel Brown of Frankfurt and Lewis Hall of Newcastle, Lewis-Skelly is a player appreciated by the Red Devils. Numerous elite clubs across Europe are tracking the situations of both Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri.

Nwaneri is currently on loan in France with Marseille. The 18-year-old, like his fellow academy graduate Lewis-Skelly, found a route to consistent match action restricted in north London.

At United, the pathway is more open at left-back, with Patrick Dorgu, who is also experiencing fitness issues, deployed in a more attacking position.

Luke Shaw is approaching the final chapters of his career and has also had to contend with ongoing fitness concerns. Tyrell Malacia appears destined to leave the club in the foreseeable future, while the club has brought in 18-year-old Diego Leon, who is yet to feature in his Premier League bow.

From an Arsenal standpoint, Mikel Arteta has consistently praised Lewis-Skelly but has been candid about the reality of the displays from both Hincapie and Calafiori.

Speaking earlier this month, he said: “Every season is different. He had very good moments in this season. He had other moments when he hasn’t played in that much.

“So, there are various reasons. Sometimes, as well, the good form of your teammates. There’s a lot of factors that contribute to that. But he’s doing well.”

Departures are a priority for Arsenal this summer, with only a handful of players in the squad regarded as genuinely “unsellable”.

Should the Gunners receive what they consider an offer too attractive to decline for one of their players, it will prove extremely challenging to reject it.

Lewis-Skelly is considered a player who could leave should interest from a club, even one in the Premier League, develop into something more concrete.

Their rivals, Manchester City, have seen several young players, like Cole Palmer and James McAtee, move on while continuing to secure major trophies, and it may be something Arsenal supporters also grow accustomed to during life at the top level.
