Man Utd star Bryan Mbeumo storms down tunnel as forward heartbroken | Football | Sport
Manchester United star Bryan Mbeumo was visibly upset following Cameroon’s unsuccessful bid to qualify for the World Cup. The African team were in play-off action on Thursday evening, aware that only a victory would keep their hopes alive of participating in this summer’s tournament in North America.
Mbeumo was part of the starting 11 for Cameroon as they faced off against DR Congo in Morocco. The match remained deadlocked until the 91st minute. It was then that Chancel Mbemba managed to sneak in at the back post to score past United loanee Andre Onana, triggering jubilant celebrations from DR Congo and leaving the Cameroonian players devastated.
This result means that DR Congo will now face Nigeria in the final, with the victors securing a place in this summer’s World Cup.
Following Cameroon’s loss, Mbeumo could not conceal his disappointment. Footage shared on social media shows the United forward clearly frustrated as he stormed down the tunnel alone, pausing only briefly to exchange a quick handshake with a member of the coaching staff.
Mbeumo is now expected to return to United and begin preparations for the Premier League match against Everton after the international break.
The 26-year-old has been a standout player for United this season, earning the Premier League player of the month award for October. In his last four Premier League matches, he has scored four times, including the opening goal against Tottenham in United’s most recent game.
United are set to lose both Cameroon’s Mbeumo and Ivory Coast’s Amad to the Africa Cup of Nations next month, a tournament that could see them miss up to six league matches.
United boss Ruben Amorim admitted the loss of the duo would be a blow but insisted it would also provide an opportunity for others in the squad.
“We are going to struggle a little bit, but we already knew it’s going to be an opportunity,” he said. “When I watch the training, there are players that should be playing.
“But it’s hard with one game to take some players from the team, because they are doing well also during the training in games. So other players are going to have the opportunity to help us.
“They are understanding the way we want to play, so if we are improving on that, the change of characteristics is not going to change the idea or the momentum of the team. But let’s use Amad and Bryan in these games and we will see in general.”
