Man Utd player ratings vs Burnley: Two 4/10s let Amorim down as Red Devils seal late win | Football | Sport
Bruno Fernandes proved to be Manchester United’s saviour once again with a last-gasp penalty to secure three points against Burnley at Old Trafford. The Red Devils were forced to huff and puff on another day that provided more questions than answers.
After the mid-week humiliation, United started on the front foot and took the game to newly promoted Burnley. The breakthrough eventually arrived midway through the first half, with Casemiro’s header cannoning back off the crossbar, hitting Burnley defender Josh Cullen and creeping over the line. Martin Dubravka did his best to get a hand to the ball, but goalline technology ruled in United’s favour, giving the hosts a lead.
United struggled to match their intensity from the first half early in the second, with Burnley deservedly equalising via Lyle Foster 10 minutes after the restart. It sparked a wild end-to-end contest, with Bryan Mbeumo immediately putting United ahead again, only for Jaidon Anthony to level things up once more at the opposite end.
Express Sport hand out player ratings from Manchester United‘s clash with Burnley.
Altay Bayindir – 4
It’s been a dismal week for United goalkeeper, with Altay Bayindir once again coming under fire. The Turkish shot-stopper didn’t exactly come across confident with the first Burnley equaliser, while it was Bayindir’s parried save that put the ball into the path of Anthony for the second.
Leny Yoro – 7
Caught on his toes for the second Burnley goal when he ought to have cleared the danger before it fell to goalscorer Anthony. It was the only downside to an otherwise solid performance for the 20-year-old, who continues to perform way beyond his years.
Matthijs de Ligt – 6
Still has work to do as the central defender in the back-three set-up, but Matthijs de Ligt is growing into the role and could prove useful for the future.
Luke Shaw – 6
Will be enjoying a solid run of fitness after a dismal time of things lately, and for Luke Shaw, that’s all he can ask for at this point.
Amad Diallo – 5
Had a golden chance to (probably) put the game to bed in added time of the first half, but Amad Diallo’s blazed his effort over the crossbar. Not his finest showing in United red.
Casemiro – 6
Had been unlucky not to have opened the scoring himself with his first-half header, but Casemiro did look his age at times in the match. What Amorim would do to rewind Casemiro’s body clock, because if he was five years younger, he’d have been a perfect asset for the ex-Sporting coach.
Bruno Fernandes – 7
Despite their issues elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes remains a class operator in the heart of United’s midfield. He kept his cool and banished the demons of last week to slot the penalty home and give United a nervy win.
Diogo Dalot – 5
Failed to close down the cross which led to Foster’s goal and looked all over the place when put under pressure by the Burnley wide players. Not the performance Diogo Dalot would’ve been hoping for after struggling during the mid-week defeat against Grimsby.
Bryan Mbeumo – 7
Had the pleasure of scoring United’s first goal of the season (previous two had been own goals) and looked a menace throughout the contest. He arrived with a big price tag, but he’s impressed in spells so far.
Matheus Cunha – 6
Lasted just 30 minutes before heading down the tunnel with what looked to be a hamstring injury. Matheus Cunha has looked bright in a United shirt so far, but Amorim will be sweating over the Brazil international’s fitness.
Mason Mount – 8
A bright spark of United’s season so far, with Mason Mount looking like one of the only beneficiaries of Amorim’s much-maligned system. Probably the standout player of the first half, and the ex-Chelsea ace was unlucky not to have found the back of the net with a header that hit the crossbar. Any hint of an injury will be a major blow to Amorim and co.
Substitutes:
Joshua Zirkzee – 6
Took a touch when he would’ve been better blasting the ball into the back of the net at 1-0, but Joshua Zirkzee did help tick things over in the final third when brought off the bench for the injured Cunha.
Kobbie Mainoo – 7
Showed glimpses of why United fans would be so devastated to see him leave the club after coming on at the break. If Mount’s injury proves serious, Kobbie Mainoo could see his minutes increase in the coming weeks.
Benjamin Sesko – 4
Looked like Bambi on ice once again when he came off the bench and should’ve netted at least two goals. While Benjamin Sesko should be given the benefit of the doubt, given he’s just arrived in English football, when you’re a £74million marquee striker signing, you can’t afford to be missing the types of chances he is.
Noussair Mazraoui – N/A
