Manchester United were held to a thrilling draw by Bournemouth in a frenetic encounter which saw the Red Devils reduced to 10 men. Harry Maguire was sent off for denial of a goalscoring opportunity when he pulled down Evanilson inside the box with the Red Devils in a leading position. Eli Junior Kroupi scored the resulting penalty to rescue a point for the Cherries near the end of a topsy-turvy second half.

It was an end-to-end affair, with both teams having plenty of chances before United took the lead from the spot. Bruno Fernandes stepped up and rolled his effort into the bottom corner, sending Petrovic the wrong way, after Matheus Cunha was brought down inside the area. United were very unfortunate to be denied another penalty when Amad was pushed to the ground shortly afterwards, with their protests being waved away.

Bournemouth went straight up the other end and found a leveller, with Ryan Christie firing home from the edge of the box. It was a controversial one, given the huge penalty appeal just seconds earlier. United quickly restored their lead thanks to an own goal from James Hill before they were gut-punched by the final and most important twist to the tale. Maguire could have no complaints as he was dismissed before Kroupi made no mistake from 12 yards to ensure the spoils were shared.

Did his defensive duties well enough, aside from a silly foul which gave Bournemouth a free-kick in a dangerous position.

Was having a good game until he was sent off for conceding the penalty that drew Bournemouth level. A crucial mistake that decided the result.

Struggled against Rayan in the first half with the Bournemouth winger causing havoc. Improved after the break.

Protected his back four well but didn’t contribute a great deal in possession apart from safe passes. Booked.

Decent but unremarkable in the middle of the park. Kept things ticking and helped control the tempo in spells of possession.

The glue for United, orchestrating things in the final third. Scored from the spot and created United’s second with a ferocious delivery.

Was heavily involved in proceedings in the final third. A much better effort than last weekend, when he was relatively quiet.

Dangerous throughout, constantly creating chances. Won the penalty after a storming run into the box. United’s best performer.

Moved well but didn’t offer much of a threat in the box. Has now gone six games without a goal for the Red Devils.

Substitutes

Benjamin Sesko – 6

Came on for the final 20 minutes, replacing Mbeumo, but couldn’t do his super-sub duties with United chasing a late winner.

Introduced in the closing stages when United were reduced in numbers. You wouldn’t have known it, though. Anonymous.

Was tasked with staying solid at the back in the last 10 minutes and did his job well enough as Bournemouth turned up the heat.

A late addition, coming on in stoppage time.
