Manchester United are eyeing up a double midfield swoop next summer, with Elliot Anderson topping the list. The Red Devils’ head coach, Ruben Amorim, is prioritising midfield reinforcements as he looks to revamp his squad, with Brighton’s Carlos Baleba also on the radar.

Despite Brighton & Hove Albion FC fending off United’s interest in the 21-year-old Cameroonian international last summer, the Old Trafford side remains keen, and the player himself is eager for the move. However, Nottingham Forest’s England international Anderson is another target for United. His versatility to play both as a defensive midfielder and an attacking one means they’re prepared to go all out to secure his services.

Anderson, 23, has been turning heads with his stellar performances for both club and country, leaving Forest bracing themselves for a fight to retain him.

Yet, Anderson is likely to come with a smaller price tag than the £100million-rated Baleba, making him an attractive potential acquisition. Veteran United player Casemiro’s contract is winding down, and he would need to accept a pay cut to stay on.

United have also shown interest in Conor Gallagher, should he be available for loan from Atletico Madrid in January, as he aims to secure a spot in the World Cup squad.

Last summer saw United invest heavily in forwards, bringing in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko. Now, they’re ready to do the same for their midfield as part of their long-term rebuilding strategy under Amorim.

After a summer of heavy investment, Amorim’s side had a dismal start to the season, languishing in 14th place by the end of September. However, they have since turned things around, going five games unbeaten.

Following a late draw against Tottenham in their last match, United now find themselves in seventh place in the league table. The Red Devils are set to return to action next weekend when they host Everton at Old Trafford.
