Liverpool’s mounting injury concerns continue to capture attention as the Reds aim to end the season on a strong note. Arne Slot’s squad are now facing the consequences of a troublesome autumn spell, with numerous fitness issues threatening to undo much of the club’s recent progress.

Slot’s team approach Sunday’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest without several key men. Liverpool have maximised the available options to secure four victories from their last five fixtures despite the absences, but the squad is now entering the most demanding phase of the season as weariness begins to take its toll.

The Reds remain in contention to secure silverware this season, despite the league title likely to prove beyond their grasp. Champions League and FA Cup glory are still achievable, although certain absentees will significantly impact team selection in the coming weeks.

With that in mind, the club have been especially shaken by the most recent fitness development. Express Sport examines the latest developments at Anfield as the club looks to resume their climb up the table.

Van Dijk backs Szoboszlai for captaincy

Dominik Szoboszlai appears destined to be crowned Liverpool’s Player of the Season following his exceptional performances at Anfield. With his game continuing to evolve, the Hungarian has received support to eventually inherit the captain’s armband.

Demands for ‘Szobosz’ to take on the captaincy have been growing louder this season. The 25-year-old has netted 10 goals and provided seven assists across 35 appearances this campaign, which is particularly remarkable considering he’s been deployed across central midfield, right-back, right wing and various other positions.

Szoboszlai has even drawn comparisons to club legend Steven Gerrard following his exceptional run of form. And current captain Van Dijk offered significant praise by endorsing his team-mate as a future candidate to inherit his armband.

“Obviously he has been very good,” said the Dutchman. “Also a player who I think can still make the next step in terms of being a leader for this team.

“It starts by leading by example and that’s something he has done so far this season. But also everything around it; there is still progress to be made, and that’s a good thing in my opinion, so hopefully he will be very important for the years to come at Liverpool.”

Van Dijk, whose Anfield contract runs until 2027, refrained from naming his team-mate as an immediate successor, given he continues to relish his own leadership position. Nevertheless, such a glowing endorsement from the present skipper further demonstrates the degree of admiration Szoboszlai holds within the dressing room.

Endo injury news “gutting” for Liverpool

Liverpool were left reeling by confirmation that Wataru Endo could be absent for the rest of the season after sustaining an injury during the 1-0 victory at Sunderland. The Japan international suffered the setback when his foot became awkwardly trapped in the surface whilst attempting a clearance, a setback made all the more painful given it marked his first league start of the campaign.

Endo, 33, has struggled to secure a regular spot in Slot’s midfield but assisted the side by deputising as an emergency right-back. Regular choices Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong are already receiving treatment, whilst Joe Gomez has been plagued by fitness concerns for months.

Van Dijk revealed just how “gutted” the entire squad felt after discovering the severity of Endo’s injury. Nevertheless, the captain displayed a united front in response to the blow and emphasised Endo as a vital figure despite his reduced playing time.

“It’s a shame, we were all really gutted after the [Sunderland] game,” said Van Dijk. “I had a similar injury when I was at Southampton, a foot injury, and it’s not an easy one to take.

“But we are here for him, we are going to be together with him all the way and support him with everything he needs. It’s not great, he is such an important and respected member of the team, he’s one of the leaders and he always leads by example as well.

“On the pitch he gives everything and you saw that in the game. It’s a big blow but we have to deal with it and we will. Hopefully it’s not going to take too long but it looks like it will be a while.”
