Liverpool supporters were left gutted this week after Mohamed Salah confirmed his forthcoming exit from the club at the end of the season. Salah’s social media video, which opened with highlights of the 33-year-old’s goals throughout his nine-year spell at Anfield, left the fanbase shocked as they face the prospect of a future without Salah on the right wing.

His exit, however, didn’t come entirely as a surprise, given his contract was due to expire in 2027. It follows his outburst towards the club’s hierarchy and Arne Slot in December, which cast his future into doubt ahead of the January window. With no Salah next season, the club’s ongoing transition has encountered a new challenge on top of the uncertainty surrounding Slot’s position. Express Sport brings you the latest Liverpool news…

Having been out of work since his departure from Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso is reportedly willing to accept the head coach position at Liverpool should an approach be made for his services, according to BILD Sport.

However, a return to Merseyside for the former Liverpool midfielder won’t be centred around the sentimental element of his reunion with Anfield, instead, it will hinge on the degree of authority he’ll be given around squad planning.

German media outlets suggest the Spaniard was refused greater involvement in team planning at Madrid before accepting the role and it’s not a scenario he wants to repeat should he become Slot’s successor.

While it remains to be seen who the Reds will pursue in the summer transfer window, Alonso would certainly be delighted with the prospect of linking up with his former Bayer Leverkusen players Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong.

Less than a year into his reported £400,000-a-week contract, Salah has chosen to seek pastures new. The decision to offer him the new deal during his historic 2024/25 campaign, which saw him lead the Reds to the Premier League title, was condemned by Jason Cundy.

The ex-Chelsea ace turned talkSPORT pundit criticised Liverpool’s hierarchy and argued the enormous deal offered to the winger should have been handed to Trent Alexander-Arnold in order to prevent his move to Real Madrid.

“All the Liverpool fans phoning up moaning about Trent, about what happened, they turned down £20m from Real Madrid,” Cundy said on the Sports Bar. “They gave Mo Salah a two-year contract on £400,000-a-week, they gave the contract to the wrong player!

“They should have given that money to Trent, in his prime. So he’s walked on a free, they’ve both walked on a free. So they give the money to Trent, and all the Liverpool fans moaning… they’ve put their eggs in the wrong basket, Liverpool.

“They’ve ballsed this right up, they should have given Trent, at the peak of his powers, give him what he wanted, sit down, do the deal, do the deal earlier, and let Salah go. Now all of a sudden, you find they’ve gone on a free… wow! I mean, that is a mess… that is an absolute mess.”
