‘Least overcrowded’ Greek beach named one of world’s most beautiful | Europe | Travel
A stunning beach in Greece that is known as one of the world’s most beautiful has just been named in the top 10 on a list of least-crowded beaches this April. Myrtos has long been dubbed one of the main attractions of Kefalonia and is considered one of Greece’s most beautiful beaches.
Located about 29km north of Argostoli, the beach has a semi-circular shape and is surrounded by picturesque, white, rocky cliffs. Myrtos beach in Kefalonia features on Wizz Air’s list of the least overcrowded beaches this Easter holiday, following analysis of more than 50 European countries. The airline estimated how much space each beach offers and combines the data with temperatures and weather conditions to give each location an overall score out of 50.
Myrtos was given a score of 30.7and came in at sixth place. The beach has received a slew of awards over the years – and most recently was named one of the “best of the best beaches” in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards.
The travel website said of Myrtos, which came in tenth place: “Surrounded by mountains, Myrtos Beach is the perfect scenic spot for a peaceful beach day. Take a dip in the cobalt blue waters or go snorkeling, then grab a bite at a coffee shop nearby. It rarely gets crowded, so there’s plenty of space to hang out and just enjoy the vibe.”
Visitors have described the beach as one of the most beautiful with reviews dubbing it “picture perfect” and “just somewhat off the beaten path”.
Others called Myrtos a “must visit”, said “pictures do not do it justice”, and explained that the water was warm, crystal clear and shimmered in “mesmerising shades of blue and green”.
You can rent a sunbed at the beach and enjoy food and drink from the beach bar, or pop into any of the 18 restaurants within a three-mile radius. Tourists can also join a boat tour to explore the island and its caves, and try the local cuisine and wine.
The beach can be accessed from a steep stretch of road which allows visitors to admire the view and watch the stunning sunset on their way back.
The water, known for its beautiful turquoise and deep blue colours, tends to be calmer in the morning so visitors are encouraged to head over early on – when they are also more likely to secure parking. Myrtos also has changing rooms and toilets.
Myrtos beach that came in first place on Wizz Air’s list was Nissi beach in Ayia Napa, Cyprus, followed by Playa d’en Bossa in Ibiza, Spain – both received a score of 36.7.
In third place was Plage de Pampelonne in Ramatuelle, France, with a score of 32.3. Also on the list were Konyaaltı Plajları in Antalya, Turkey; Kalithea in Rhodes, Greece; and Beach of Durrës in Durrës, Albania.
