Jurgen Klopp set to leave Liverpool as German manager releases emotional statement | Football | Sport
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that he will leave the club at the end of the season in a bombshell announcement. On Thursday, the German boss confirmed his decision to end his historic nine-year tenure at Anfield with an emotional recorded statement.
“Yeah, I have to [explain]. I will leave the club at the end of the season,” Klopp told Liverpool’s official website in a video posted on social media.
“I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people at this moment when you hear it for the first time, but obviously, I can explain it, or at least try to explain it.
“I love absolutely everything about this club. I love everything about the city. I love everything about our supporters. I love the team. I love the staff. I love everything.
“That I still take this decision, it shows you that I’m convinced it’s one I have to take. It is that I am… how can I say this? I’m running out of energy.
“I have no problem now, obviously. I think I know it already for longer that I will have to announce that at one point.
“But, I’m absolutely fine now. But I also know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.
“And, after all the years we had together and after all the time we spent together, and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you, and the last thing I owe you is the truth, and that’s the truth.”
Liverpool have confirmed that assistant managers Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, as well as elite development coach Vitor Matos, will join Klopp in stepping down from their roles.
Lijnders is said to be ready to start his own career in management, having previously been touted as Klopp’s potential successor at Anfield.
