Jos Verstappen health update issued after terrifying rollover crash in Sweden Rally | F1 | Sport
Jos Verstappen escaped unhurt from a rollover rally crash during a recent race in Sweden. Jos, who is the father of four-in-a-row Formula One champion Max Verstappen, was taking part in the third round of the European Rally Championship’s Rally of Scandinavia.
The crash brought Jos and his co-driver Renaud Jamoul’s day to a halt earlier than expected, with their rear wheels having dipped in the gravel. It caused the Skoda Fabia RS Rally 2 to roll over, suffering damage in the process, with social media photos painting a grim picture.
Photographs that were shared online showed the car with a crack to the windscreen, but fortunately, both Jos and Renaud exited the car uninjured. The pair are planning to dust themselves down and return to the track on Saturday. Another eight stages are planned, with Jos and his partner currently 30th in the standings.
It could leave Jos with just enough time to jet over to Barcelona to catch Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix. His son impressed during qualifying, with reports having suggested earlier this week Verstappen is expected to stay at Red Bull for the 2026 season, despite suggestions he could look to move on for pastures new.
Jos’ relationship with Red Bull head-honcho Christian Horner has also been a topic of discussion, with the Dutchman having opened up about the pair’s status. He recently told De Limburger: “I don’t think we should go on holiday together. But at the end of the day, I don’t work here and he is Max’s team boss.
“There has to be mutual respect, and there is. Together with Raymond [Vermeulen], I do get involved in Max’s management and it is important that there is a good relationship between all parties. All sorts of things have indeed happened, but that doesn’t matter now. I am straightforward and say what I think. They just have to take that into account, I am not going to change, not for anyone.”
Championship leader Oscar Piastri finished Friday as the fastest in practice, with George Russell closely following behind. Verstappen and Lando Norris posted identical times, with suggestions the reigning world champion could threaten the two McLaren stars during Saturday’s qualifying session.
Piastri and Norris are separated by three points at the top of the Drivers’ Championship standings, with the expectation that one of the McLaren men will end Verstappen’s dominance this season.
