Job expert shares who would be exempt from conscription | UK | Travel
Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, people are fearful the UK won’t be dragged into war. And if conflict was to sipral – some have been left wondering whether or not they’d be conscripted into the Army.
Following these worries, an employment expert has shared a list of professions and groups of people she believes would be exempt from any military duty.
Steph Chulo, who specialises in business start-up, took to TikTok in a bid to calm the fears of those who believe the Israel-Iran conflict may become something wider. She believes these cateogires of people would not have to worry…
1. Medical
The most “obvious” group in Steph’s eyes are those who face medical challenges. She explained: “We are talking about those with asthma, mobility issues – anything that will stop you being useful in a war scenario.”
2. Objectors
Steph continued, revealing she had recently been inundated with “conscientious objectors” seeking advice on where they stand.
“Just because you don’t believe in the war, doesn’t mean you are not going to be involved, you’re just not going to be fighting,” she said.
As such, roles providing help in postal, food and medical services would require work, Steph added.
3. Protected Professions
Those in jobs including the police force, fire service, train drivers, nuclear scientists and farmers all fall into this protected category, Steph believes.
She said: “These are all roles the UK needs to keep in the UK. These will help to keep society functioning if there was a war.”
4. Students
Steph pointed out that this may come as a surprise to some, claiming university admissions could “skyrocket” should war start on a wider scale.
“Students are not required to go to war under conscription,” she stated.
5. Carers
Another “obvious” group, Steph noted that primary caregivers such as single parents wouldn’t be expected to go to war.
6. Over 50s
Closing Steph’s list is those who are age-restricted, meanwhile.
“So you have to be at least 18 and no more than a certain age that they will decide,” she explained. “This realistically is going to be about 50, so if you are around 30 or 40 and thinking you are safe – think again.”
In final words of wisdom, however, Steph said not to panic. That’s because conscription needs to be a law passed by government first.
“Although things are looking a little bit exciting in the Middle East right now, it doesn’t mean we are going to go into conscription straight away for this,” she added.
Writing in response, one TikTok user penned sarcastically: “I love that the government think that conscription would work. People do not have the same sense of patriotism they did during WW2. People do not blindly listen to authority the way they used to. Furthermore, weaponary is so dangerous these days people would rather end up in prison that being killed on the front line.”
Meanwhile, another attempted to calm fears. They added: “Conscription is of course massively unlikely and would require an imminent threat of invasion… the armed forces are far too small to even begin training massive numbers.”
