Jannik Sinner’s parents snub ATP Finals with ‘more important’ issue pressing | Tennis | Sport
Jannik Sinner has revealed that his parents won’t be coming to the ATP Finals final on Sunday as he looks to defend his title in Turin. The world No. 2 has made it to the championship match without having his serve broken, and has not dropped a set at the ATP Finals since 2023.
Sinner will now face either Carlos Alcaraz or Felix Auger-Aliassime in the championship match as he looks to keep that streak alive, but his mum and dad won’t be there. Johann and Siglinde Sinner watched their son lift the ATP Finals trophy last year, and they’ve been at plenty of other big finals, but the defending champion joked that they had something “more important” to attend to.
The No. 2 seed might be playing on home soil in Italy, but that doesn’t mean his parents can watch the championship match. However, the Sinner family will have some representation in his box on Sunday.
“My brother Mark is here. Mum and Dad aren’t coming because they have something to do at home that’s obviously more important,” the Italian told Ubitennis after beating Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals.
This is Sinner’s third successive final in Turin. In 2023, he lost to Novak Djokovic, having beaten the Serbian superstar during the round-robin stage a few days earlier. Last year, Sinner beat Taylor Fritz to clinch the title.
As for what fans can expect this time around, Sinner said: “For us players who play all year, it’s hard to say how we’ll play in the next finals. I’ve made a big step forward compared to last year. I play better in everything, but that’s my personal opinion. I hope tomorrow will be a good, high-level final, with two players in good form.”
There’s a lot on the line in the final. After sealing a 7-5 6-2 victory over De Minaur, the Italian is on a 30-match winning streak on indoor hard courts. He’s also not lost a match since retiring from the Shanghai Masters in early October.
Sinner won back-to-back titles at the Vienna Open and Paris Masters, and is on a 14-match unbeaten run. The 24-year-old has also become the third man to reach the finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments and of the ATP Finals in a single season, after Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. And he’s the youngest to achieve that feat.
Should Sinner face Alcaraz, it will be their first official meeting since the Spaniard beat the world No. 2 in the US Open final. However, Sinner beat him in the final of the Six Kings Slam exhibition last month.
The four-time Major winner has also beaten Auger-Aliassime twice in the last three weeks. He defeated the Canadian in the Paris Masters final, and also won their round-robin match at the start of the tournament.
