Jannik Sinner unable to contain emotions after beating Carlos Alcaraz | Tennis | Sport

Jannik Sinner secured a remarkable £3.8million payday after defeating rival Carlos Alcaraz to claim the 2025 ATP Finals crown in Turin. The Italian triumphed 7-6(4), 7-5 to capture the largest prize money in ATP history, extending his winning streak at the season-ending championship to 10-0 across the past two years, including back-to-back finals victories over the Spaniard.

Whilst the triumph wasn’t sufficient to see him finish the year as world No. 1, it did improve his head-to-head record against Alcaraz to 6-10. The 23-year-old collapsed to the court in sheer disbelief, visibly emotional, following match point, when an Alcaraz backhand sailed wide.

“It was tough today,” Sinner said in his speech. “Playing against Carlos, you have to play at your best. I was serving very well at times, but he is one of the best returners in the game.

“It was a very, very close match. I saved a set point in the first set, and I am extremely happy with how I handled the situation, and it means the world to me.”

The 23-year-old concludes what ranks amongst the finest individual campaigns in men’s tennis history on a triumphant note. He became the youngest player to reach the final of all four Grand Slams and the ATP Finals in a single calendar year.

He captured six titles and contested 10 finals across 12 tournaments, with his sole withdrawal due to injury in Cincinnati. Sinner’s victories at Wimbledon and the Australian Open delivered his second and third Grand Slam crowns.

Alcaraz and Sinner dominated the tennis scene this year, winning 18 out of 19 tournaments they both participated in. The 22-year-old Spaniard, who clinched the French and US Open titles in 2025, lauded Sinner following their ATP Finals showdown.

“I’m just really, really happy with the level I played today,” Alcaraz added. “I just played against someone who hasn’t lost a match on an indoor court in 2 years. That shows what a great player you are. You and your team putting great work every time. You come back even stronger after every loss. You don’t have many, but you come back stronger. Well deserved.

“I want to say it is a great year for you. It’s time to rest. I hope you’re going to be ready for next year, because I’ll be ready. Hopefully, I’ll play more finals against you. Well-deserved year. Well-deserved trophy.”
