I’ve visited 60 Christmas markets – these are the ones to avoid | Travel News | Travel

Christmas is less than four weeks away, and there’s nothing better than visiting a market to get into the festive spirit. A Christmas market expert has shared their insight on which are the best – and which to avoid.

Maren Schullerus, 35, is GetYourGuide’s very own expert, and she’s been to over 60 of them, reports Daily Mail. She grew up in Germany, known for its incredible selection of traditional festive markets; so her advice can’t be ignored.

She says the best one she’s ever been to is the Esslingen medieval market and Christmas market in Esslingen am Neckar, Germany. Maren also mentions other markets worth visiting, including Prague and Strasbourg.

With her expertise, she’s also shared which aren’t worth the trip.

Maren says: “I’d say, each market has its own festive charm, so I can’t share any one particular market to avoid.

“But, if there’s a particular vibe you’re after, such as those that are more traditional with fewer crowds, definitely visit markets in smaller, more regional towns versus sticking to only the big cities.

“Oftentimes, clues like the presence of multi-colored and brightly lit carousels are a tell-tale sign of a busier, more commercial experience.”

She also suggests avoiding any Christmas markets which are overly commercialised.

In the UK, some of the biggest festive options can be found in Birmingham, London and Manchester. For smaller, more independent markets, you can visit Oxford, Nottingham and Sheffield.
