Inside the Wimbledon Champions’ Dinner as Sinner drinking a lot and Swiatek’s secrets out | Tennis | Sport

New Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek has insisted she never considered giving Amanda Anisimova a single game during their one-sided final. “I think any athlete would understand that”, she said. The Pole became the first woman to win a Wimbledon 6-0 6-0 since 1911 to reduce the American to tears.

The new world No.3 has now won all six of her Grand Slam finals on three different surfaces in ruthless style. But speaking at the Champions Dinner at the Raffles Hotel in Central London, Swiatek said: “It’s not that easy.”

And asked by host Laura Robson if she considered giving her a game, the new All England Club member said: “No! I didn’t, but I think any athlete would understand that. Obviously, like, I am an emotional person, so inside, I feel much, much more than what I show outside.

“And for sure, in this tournament, I knew I just needed to be brave and the final, I also know, since I won semi final, basically I felt bit more nervous, so I knew that I just need to be in my zone, really focus on every point and not take everything for granted, fight for everything.

“And yeah, at the end, it finished with a score like that, which obviously wasn’t planned. But I’m happy that I used every opportunity to finally win the trophy, because it’s the best feeling ever.”

Robson revealed she found Swiatek eating a Twix in the locker-room after her win. “This tournament is like putting out all the secrets. The towels, my eating habits. So, no, after the match, I was on a [strict] diet for the last two weeks, my team didn’t help me much, because they ate not the best food every day, but, but I had to be strict. I wanted to be fit, so after that, I know I went a bit crazy.

“I’m gonna have probably, like, six days off. That’s the most I could negotiate. But honestly, I gotta say that I really, I feel like this last couple of weeks, they were already, like, the best part of my season, and I really enjoyed myself on the court, even though I didn’t expect that on grass. So I just want to literally, like, get back on court and have these feelings again. After such a win and the emotions and everything that comes with it, I’m gonna need some time to probably get back on it, but, yeah, we have US Open swing coming and tourism tense, so not a lot of time to get vacation.”

Swiatek then shared a dance with new men’s champion Jannik Sinner at about 1am on Monday morning.

The Italian, who arrived late after his four-set win over Carlos Alcaraz, said: “We were drinking quite a lot in the last hours. A bit turning, the head, but it’s all good. No, it’s very, very special to have my family here and the whole team. It’s a very special evening. So, you know, seeing also Iga here with the family and the whole team, it’s amazing. My drink of choice? Tonight? Champagne.”

But Sinner also admitted his fortune to win his fourth round tie against Grigor Dimitrov when the popular Bulgarian suffered a pectoral muscle tear when he was two sets up.

“Yes, I got lucky,” said the world No.1. “Against Grigor, things were turning out very difficult, but it’s not the way you want to win a match. It’s all about, at times, to take the chance, and I took it. And then after, at some point, I really started to play well, especially against Ben. And then this confidence helped me to go through Novak, which is very, very difficult in Grand Slams especially, and today was again a rollercoaster against Carlos.

“I would have never thought that one day could change so much, emotion wise, and then happiness and then delusions, because in Paris it was very, very tough to go away from Paris with these feelings. And this makes it even more special this time.

Asked about his post-match emotion, the Italian said: “Yeah, I nearly cried. Not cried, but nearly. But no, I always say Wimbledon is the tournament. There is a lot of history as we can see, and ready to walk on and it’s very special. And winning there today was truly, I believe, the most special moment of my life on a tennis court. Obviously off the court, health and everything is much more important. But yeah, today, it was amazing.”
