‘I’m a travel expert – doing 1 thing when booking a holiday will save you money’ | Travel News | Travel
Travel experts at Which? shared some of their favourite travel hacks which can help save you money on your next trip. When it comes to holidays and travel it can feel like money is constantly draining from your bank account, but it doesn’t always have to be pricey.
In a recent TikTok video, the travel experts shared how changing how you book your flights, accommodation, and other big purchases could see you save some precious pennies. When it comes to booking sites, you may want to switch your device. The experts explained: “If you’re using booking sites like, say, Booking.com […] always check the price on your mobile rather than a laptop because often they offer unique discounts for booking this way.
“It can be like 20 percent off or something like that.”
However, they also pointed out another way which you might be able to save some money. Don’t be afraid to contact airlines or hotels directly, advised Which?.
The experts continued: “But it is also always worth contacting the hotel direct to see if they can beat the best price you found. Even if they can’t, often they will throw in a perk such as a free room upgrade or maybe breakfast.”
In Which’s second annual Shoddy Awards last summer, the experts pointed out a number of sites and companies which have hidden fees, meaning you’ll end up paying more than what you bargained for.
While it appears some travel sites offer the cheapest headline price, there are a number of hidden costs customers find themselves faced with.
This means that by the time customers get to the payment stage, they’ll be faced with “hefty fees for baggage”, seat selection, and potential memberships “you didn’t know you asked for”.
If you’re looking for a wallet-friendly flight, Which? Travel recommended booking directly with your chosen airline.
They said: “A word of advice: always book flights directly with the airline. Even the very best of the online travel agents are just an unnecessary middleman that makes your holiday harder.”
Which? also advised people buying train tickets when you’re at the station, especially if you’re travelling around the UK. Instead opt to buy them ahead of time online.
Lastly, make sure you don’t leave booking your flights for the last minute.
Which? said: “Set up a price alert two to six months in advance with Skyscanner or Google Alerts, and then you can book your flight when the price drops.”
