‘I’m a cruise expert – never make this mistake on the ship’ | Cruise | Travel
A popular cruising personality has shared two tips to help future passengers get on well with members of staff on board the ship.
Ilana Schattauer is a travel expert who runs the blog and YouTube channel Life Well Cruised, creating videos on a wide range of subjects to give tourists advice on how to get the most out of their trip.
In a recent video, Ilana discussed good etiquette to follow whilst on board a cruise ship, stating that passengers who regularly interact with certain members of staff should try to remember their names.
She advised: “Obviously, this is when somebody has introduced themself to you, like the cabin attendant or waiter, if you have the same staff member night after night. It’s just good etiquette to use their name.
“Even a bartender – if you see the same bartender all the time. Not only are they going to appreciate it, but you’re probably going to get a little bit better service.”
Whilst passengers could not be expected to memorise the name of each member of staff on board, with some ships having a crew of more than 2,000, it is a good idea to keep the names of people tourists regularly interact with in mind.
This includes the cabin attendant, sometimes called the steward, regular waiters, bartenders, and other staff members who passengers may regularly encounter in public spaces of the ship.
In most cases, all staff members on board a cruise ship will have nametags, preventing guests from having to ask. However, those who take the time to remember the names of staff members will likely receive much friendlier interactions and possibly better service.
Later in the video, Ilana also suggested that passengers should never be afraid to politely ask for something they are missing, rather than waiting until the end of the trip to complain.
She added: “Speaking of crew, ask, don’t complain. So, if there is something that you would like from your cabin attendant, or anyone else from the cruise for that matter, it is just good practice to ask for it.
“So, if you need more clothes hangers in your cabin, if you need anything in the dining room, don’t wait until that time is over and then complain to guest services, ask when you are right there because, truthfully, the cruise staff really do want you to have a good time and leave a good review in the survey – it means a lot to them.”
