Huge boost for UK seaside town as incredible swimming pool set to open | UK | News

Plans have been unveiled to build an incredible open-air swimming pool next to the beach at a historic UK seaside town. The plans involve transforming a council-owned car park on the seafront into a huge lido.

The Marina Bathing Pool in Ramsgate, Kent, opened in 1935 but closed in 1975 due to structural issues. However, the lido could now make a return, with Heritage Lab revealing its in “early discussions with an experienced developer” to build an outdoor pool complex on the Marina Esplanade Car Park.

As reported by The Sun, the Marina Bathing Pool, which included an Olympic-sized pool and diving area, was open for 40 years before being replaced by a car park. The new site could also have saunas, cafes and social spaces to ensure it can be used throughout the year.

A Heritage Lab spokesperson said: “Thanet has a thriving sea and open-water swimming culture, with people of all ages swimming year-round for wellbeing and connection.

“Outdoor swimming isn’t niche anymore – it’s a movement. Pair it with saunas, cafés or social spaces and you create something truly special: a year-round destination for locals and visitors alike. The level of public interest over the past 24 hours has been extremely encouraging.”

A number of people have since responded to the news on social media. Many agree that a new lido would be a welcome addition to the town.

One person said on Facebook: “This is a great idea – put our outdoor pool back.” A second added: “Ramsgate is a special place and deserves a lido.”

A third wrote: “Would be fantastic for the area, can’t say I’ve seen the car park used to full capacity, what great use of the space. It’s definitely in line with the current out door swim culture that promotes wellbeing and health for the mind and body.”

A fourth put: “Brilliant idea, just what Ramsgate needs!” A fifth agreed: “This would be amazing.”

The plans include a complex consisting of a large pool as well as two smaller ones. There’s also an outdoor seating area and three-storey building.

Last June, Heritage Lab announced plans to transform eight Art Deco shelters on Ramsgate’s East Cliff. The plans involve the creation of a water sports facilities, a sauna and a food and drinks outlet.
