Households urged to stockpile sand this November | UK | News

Heavy storms are set to batter the UK this weekend as Storm Claudia brings rain, wind and disruption.

But whether this storm affects you where you live or not, it seems that cold, wet November weather is finally arriving after an unseasonably mild start to the month.

Now, insurance experts are urging households to prepare for the wet weather conditions – by stockpiling sand, among other key preparations.

According to Kara Gammell, insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, one in five homes in the UK is at risk of flooding this winter, that’s some 6.3million properties.

She urged households to prepare by buying sandbags, as well as checking and making sure drains are not blocked.

She said: “A common misconception is that your home is only at risk from flooding if you live beside the water when, in fact, 6.3 million properties are at risk of flooding in England – a figure set to rise to 8 million by 2025. With the value of weather-related damage home claims reaching £573 million in 2024, if you don’t have insurance, the financial cost could be life-changing.

“Stock up on sand – consider investing in some sandbags, which are an old school but very effective tool for controlling the flow of water during a flood, especially if you’re in an area that’s prone to flooding.

“Clear the way – blocked drainage is a major cause of surface water flooding. Remove fallen leaves, moss and debris from drains and gutters to prevent blockages that can lead to water damage and a potential denied claim, due to lack of maintenance.

“Get snappy – take photos of your home and garden now, while they’re in good condition. It can act as proof against weather-related disputes later. You can also keep a simple home maintenance diary to show you’ve taken steps to maintain your property.

“Look for signs – inspect ceilings, walls and loft spaces for early signs of water or damp. Fixing small problems now can prevent bigger damage later.

“Check your home’s exterior – it’s best to regularly inspect the state of your walls and your roof. Check for missing tiles, cracks or other places where water could seep into your home.

“MoneySuperMarket data shows that average home insurance premiums for properties that have experienced flooding prior to taking out insurance are double that of properties that have never experienced flooding, so if you’re looking for home insurance, make sure you compare policies to find the right cover at the best value for your home.

“While flood insurance is included in most home insurance policies, it can increase the cost of your policy if your home is judged to be at a high risk of flooding.”

The Met Office issued a rare amber weather warning for today (Friday) due to Storm Claudia, warning of heavy rain. It said: “Storm Claudia, previously named by the Spanish Meteorological Service, will bring rain that will become persistent and heavy during Friday.

“40-60mm of rain is expected widely across this region with some places seeing around 80mm; these higher accumulations are more probable across the East Midlands, and higher ground in Wales and western England. Impacts may be exacerbated by strong easterly winds, as well as thunderstorms later Friday afternoon and evening.”
