Witnesses said flames rapidly spread through the vehicle, with sparks and debris falling onto the tarmac. The car appeared to have been left away from other parked vehicles in the car park with the boot open.
Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed crews had the blaze under control within around half an hour of arriving.
Crews used two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire
A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service explained that the car “seemed to have been modified by the owner” and was “well alight” when crews arrived at the scene.
They said: “The fire was out by around 5.30pm and before leaving the scene crews spoke with the Lidl staff – the car remained in a cordon. Neighbouring vehicles in the car park had heat damage.”
The burnt-out vehicle was left inside a safety cordon while firefighters spoke with supermarket staff.
No injuries were reported following the incident.
The cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed with investigations ongoing.
Photos taken by a local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, show the aftermath of the incident, with the car completely burned with just its frame and tyres remaining.
