Benidorm is notorious for being a British tourist hotspot thanks to its sunshine, cheap prices, and the famous Calle Gerona – best known as ‘the strip’.
But while it’s likely you will see stag and hen do parties parading down the street, the holiday destination also has many breathtaking spots you may not be aware of.
One way to get away from the party environment is to head to this gorgeous small town near Benidorm.Despite being a matter of minutes away, it’s world’s away from the party scene, having been compared to the beauty of Mykonos.
Just an 18 minute drive or 12 minute bus from Benidorm Intermodal, you will find the picturesque spot of Altea, Alicante.
Hailed as one of Spain’s “most iconic” towns, you will feel like you have stepped back in time.The fairytale-like old town is filled with narrow, cobbled streets and bright whitewash houses.
As you wander through the streets you will smell the fresh aroma of coffee from a local cafe, or food from quaint restaurants.
Tourists are often wowed by the beauty of the parish church, known as Nuestra Señora del Consuelo or Iglesia de Arriba. And as you look out beyond the church, you will see the glistening blue sea and long stretch of beach.
Alice, who shares the best parts of Benidorm and her recommendations online, recently visited Altea and insisted it is a must for your travel list.
The content creator, who boasts over 37,000 followers on TikTok, said: “Hidden gem only 15 mins from Benidorm!
“Maybe Altea isn’t a hidden gem for those in the know, but the way you could lowkey be just 15 mins away from this gorgeous slice of history and culture while on your holibobs in Benidorm!”
She added: “It’s an absolute MUST see if you’re looking to escape for an afternoon to see some of the best views on the entire Costa Blanca. It’s giving cheeky altea day trip, don’t you think?”
Plenty of people agreed – as the short clip has garnered more than 16,300 likes and plenty of positive comments.
One visitor shared: “I went there in December. Very nice.” While another said: “There are stunning restaurants and bars. It’s not Benidorm. They may be close but they are worlds apart. Altea is beautiful.”
A third chimed in: “It’s simply a stunning old and new town.” While someone else dubbed it as their “fave place of all time”.
One other insisted it is now on their bucket list, writing: “Definitely heading here.. never knew it was so close.”
Flights from the UK to Alicante can be snapped up from as little as £40. You can then get a bus, cab or tram to Benidorm. By road, this should take you around 40 minutes.
