Greece earthquake LIVE: Crete rocked by 5.9 magnitude tremor | World | News
For several years, Santorini has been grappling with an overtourism crisis, plagued by crowded streets and jam-packed ports during the day thanks to hordes of tourists pouring off cruise ships and day-trip ferries.
However, earlier this year, the iconic Greek island was rattled by a worrying cluster of powerful earthquakes, so much so that people were put off from booking their holidays there.
As a result, arrivals are down in Santorini by 40% this year.
“It’s like the island used to be – much quieter and much nicer,” said Giorgos Karayiannis, manager of Astra Suites, told The Telegraph, adding that this has been helped by a restriction on the number of cruise ships, which has also made a “big difference.”
