Gordon and Trippier forcibly separated as Newcastle stars clash on pitch | Football | Sport

Kieran Trippier angrily confronted his team-mate Anthony Gordon as Newcastle surged to a 5-0 half-time lead against Qarabag in the Champions League. The Magpies faced their Azerbaijan opponents in the first leg of their play-off tie, and they seized control within the first 45 minutes.

Gordon netted four goals in the first half at the Tofiq Bahramov Stadium, with two coming from the penalty spot. However, as Gordon prepared to take his second spot-kick, which subsequently extended Newcastle’s lead to 5-0 during first-half injury time, tempers flared between Eddie Howe’s squad.

But as the players made their way off the pitch at half-time, Trippier went over to Gordon and shouted at the forward, pointing his finger as he remonstrated with his fellow Englishman.

Gordon offered a response before Dan Burn intervened and separated the pair, guiding them down the tunnel, while Anthony Elanga also put his arm around Gordon to try and calm the situation.

The pair both emerged for the second half, but Gordon was replaced after an hour, along with Elanga and Joe Willock. Qarabag got a goal back to somewhat keep the two-legged tie alive, but they need a mammoth comeback at St James’ Stadium to overturn this deficit.

Gordon, especially, received a standing ovation as he scored four goals in Europe. Two came from the penalty spot and the England international added another two in the opening 45 minutes to take advantage of some woeful Qarabag defending.

Gordon opened the scoring in the third minute, before Malick Thiaw doubled the lead as the visitors began to run riot in Baku.

Jacob Murphy then scored his first-ever Champions League goal in the 72nd minute with a long-range, curled effort that took a big deflection.

Gordon’s four-goal haul takes him to 10 goals in the Champions League, though he still trails behind Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe and his 13 strikes.

The 24-year-old played through the middle with Nick Woltemade and flourished again, flanked by Elanga and Harvey Barnes on a hugely positive night for the Magpies, all-but securing their place in the knockout stages, despite tempers flaring at half-time.
