Gerwyn Price sets retirement deadline as darts star admits ‘it’s not g | Other | Sport

Gerwyn Price has insisted that he will continue to compete at the top level for at least the next 10 years. However, the darts star is weighing up whether to make some major changes to his schedule in the hope of being able to remain competitive for many years to come.

The busy darts calendar has been the topic of many conversations over the past few weeks, and Price is the latest star to address the toll that playing so regularly is having.

The Welshman has enjoyed a sensational career at the oche over the years, winning seven major titles, including the PDC World Darts Championship in 2021. But Price isn’t completely satisfied with his achievements so far. The 40-year-old has his heart set on securing at least one more success at Alexandra Palace before even considering whether to retire.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Price was asked whether he would take a guaranteed World Championship win if it meant that he would have to retire on the spot afterwards, to which he replied: “No, I’m sticking around for the next 10 years. I mean, one World Championship, it’s not good enough.”

Price then spoke of how he could reschedule his current calendar, explaining: “I would never give up totally. But the Pro Tours and Europeans, depending on how many it’s going to be at that time, because it’s getting more and more every year, but I’ll stop doing those.

“I would never give my Tour Card up. I’d still do events and if they invite me to the Premier League and World Series, I’ll still do them, but none of the lower events and just stop the travelling.”

Nathan Aspinall has recently spoken about how he intends to retire within the next 12 years due to the PDC schedule. He told SportsBoom: “45 and I’m off. I’ve said to my partner if that’s me, it is 45. If it’s earlier than that, and we start making golfers’ money and I’ve got £30 million in the bank I’ll be off sooner.

“But I don’t think it’s going to happen that quick. But 45 is when I’d like to bugger off. Compared to even ten years ago. The calendar is absolutely obscene. For us to take a weekend off, I have to pull out events so I’m losing ranking money because I just need a few days off. And I’ve done that over the last couple of weeks because I was in a tight position in the Premier League, I really wanted to make the playoffs.”
