High street lender Santander has announced plans to shut 95 UK branches as part of an overhaul, threatening around 750 jobs. The Spanish-owned bank will also cut hours across 36 sites and switch 18 to be counter-free. The sweeping changes mean there will be just 349 branches left.

The move forms part of a broader trend, with thousands of bank branches shuttering in recent years. According to consumer group Which?, over 6,200 bank and building society branches have closed since January 2015. On average, this equates to 53 closures every month.

A Santander UK spokesman said: “As customer behaviour changes, we are ensuring that our branches remain fit for the future.
“Our new combination of full-service branches, alongside work cafes, counter-free branches and reduced hours branches, aims to provide the right balance between digital banking and face-to-face money management and guidance. Closing a branch is always a very difficult decision and we spend a great deal of time assessing where and when we do this and how to minimise the impact it may have on our customers.”

The cash access network, Link, has recommended 19 new banking hubs following Santander UK’s announcement to shutter more branches.

A banking hub is similar to a traditional bank branch, but multiple banks share the space.

Hubs have a counter service operated by Post Office employees, where customers of any bank can withdraw and deposit cash, make bill payments and carry out regular banking transactions.

There are also private spaces where customers can speak to community bankers from their own bank for more complicated matters requiring specialist knowledge or privacy.

The banks work rotationally, so staff from different providers are available on different days.

One of the 19 hubs recommended by Link, located in Tonbridge, Kent, resulted from a community appeal, with the remaining 18 triggered by Santander’s announcement.

Link has recommended 224 hubs so far. The Government has committed to delivering 350 banking hubs throughout this Parliament. To date, 139 banking hubs are up and running.

Since 2022, Link has assessed 1,879 bank branch closures and continues to receive community requests for better cash access.
