A fresh alert has been issued to Brits travelling to a popular spot in South Africa after holidaymakers were targeted in a string of attacks. The Foreign Office warned all tourists heading to South Africa’s national parks after a series of “recent violent attacks and muggings against hikers and foreign tourists in Table Mountain National Park, including on Lion’s Head and Signal Hill”. In its latest update, it said: “Updated information about Table Mountain National Park, wildfires in Cape Town and air travel.

“Know your limits, research possible trails and select a route suitable to your fitness level. Check SANPARKS for the latest guidance including hazards such as wildfires. Always check the availability of the cable car if you are planning to use it.” The Foreign Office warned visitors heading to Table Mountain that some “trails are strenuous, and mountain rescuers get regular calls to help hikers.”

It advised those staying outside the park to contact their lodge beforehand to see whether any disruptions might affect their visit.

“If you stay outside the park, contact your lodge in advance to find out if any disruptions will affect your trip. You can fly directly to Kruger National Park from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Many people also choose to take a private tour or drive overland themselves.”

A wildfire warning has also been issued, with the potential for blazes in both rural and urban settings during periods of hot, dry weather, including in the Cape Town and Table Mountain National Parks.

In December, British travellers were warned of high terrorism and unrest risks in South Africa amid heightened global tensions and political instability.

The advisory highlighted the risk of terrorist attacks primarily from individuals inspired by groups such as Daesh. These attacks could target public spaces, including tourist attractions, shopping centers and major events.

Protests and demonstrations frequently erupt in the country, particularly in city centers and townships. These events can escalate into violence without warning, posing a threat to participants and bystanders alike

Tourists are advised to avoid areas where protests are occurring and to exercise caution when navigating unfamiliar areas, as GPS systems may direct users through insecure regions.
