Fly to this hidden European ‘winter wonderland’ for £39 with mulled wine for under £2 | Travel News | Travel

Christmas markets in Europe are becoming incredibly popular thanks to their festive atmosphere, rich history, and opportunities for socialising and shopping, where you can find unique gifts for your loved ones.

However, they can often be a costly event. A cup of “Glühwein” (mulled wine) at the Berlin Christmas market can set you back five euros, plus another three if you’d like to keep the mug as a memento.

Staying closer to home is not always the answer either – it is no secret that UK Christmas markets are among some of Europe’s most expensive. You will need to fork out around £25 for a beer and a bratwurst if they pay the Manchester Christmas markets a visit this year.

If you are keen to plan a festive getaway but are a little strapped for cash, some of the “lesser known” European Christmas markets can cost a fraction of the price and are often far less busy than those in the UK.

For those needing some inspiration, the team at Eurochange has revealed the best alternative Christmas market in Europe, as well as priced up the cheapest flights from the UK and the average hotel cost.

Laura Evans-Fisk, head of digital and engagement at Eurochange, said: “Our research shows the Christmas Market in Wroclaw, Poland, is one of the best European Christmas markets to visit if you’re looking for the best value for money and a truly authentic experience.”

Wroclaw’s Christmas market is held across four interconnected locations: Rynek Market Square, Plac Solny, Świdnicka Street, and Oławska Street.

Visitors can explore wooden stalls offering handmade crafts and local treats such as Oscypek (a smoked cheese), sausages, Bigos (a traditional Polish stew), and potato pancakes.

As a bonus, entry to the market is free.

Food and drinks are considered affordable, with mulled wine (Grzane Wino) priced at 15 PLN (£3.10) at the market, while nearby restaurants offer it for just 9 PLN (£1.86).

“A three-course meal for two will also only cost £39, so it’s a perfect romantic getaway or trip with friends.

“You can get accommodation for less than £15pp per night, and food and drinks are very affordable, said  Laura Evans-Fisk. “For example, a mulled wine will cost you less than £2, which is pretty much unheard of in the UK!”

According to the Wroclaw Guide website, the market will feature a “fairytale” forest, where visitors can take photos next to giant wooden mushrooms and trees. Other attractions include a carousel, a rollercoaster, and a towering Christmas tree, which will be illuminated on December 6.

The market runs from November 29 to January 7.

According to Eurochange, the cheapest direct UK flights (per person) are £29 from Luton, £39 from London Stansted, £54 from Manchester, and £57 from Liverpool.

The cheapest accommodation price the team found was £29 per night, based on two adults sharing.

The team revealed that the total trip cost, based on the cheapest options for two nights, was just £87.
