Five England stars singled out as Roy Keane blasts ‘sloppy’ player | Football | Sport
Five England stars were singled out by Roy Keane and Ian Wright during their 2-0 win over Albania, including two players the former Manchester United midfielder was unhappy with. After a first half that saw the Three Lions knock on the door but struggle to seriously threaten their opponents, Keane demanded more from Thomas Tuchel’s men.
Jarrod Bowen came closest in the opening 45 minutes with a shot from close range that was parried by Thomas Strakosha, after Tuchel had made a host of changes from the team that beat Serbia just a few days earlier. One of them was restoring Jude Bellingham to the starting lineup, but he failed to win over Keane.
“[You want] Eze and Bellingham just to turn up a little bit, a bit sloppy,” Keane said during ITV’s half-time analysis. “Credit to Albania but England need to speed things up a bit.”
Wright then highlighted several stars for their efforts in the opening stage: “You see someone like Jarrod Bowen, he looks like someone who is right up for it, ready to play. It’s interesting to see John Stones moving forward, he is going into midfield.
“The same with Adam Wharton, constantly wants to get the ball forward and not afraid in a game that has quite a lot riding on him being in the squad. He still tries to get the ball forward in areas where it might get cut out.
“That’s what he does, that’s how he plays, that’s what you look for in games like this.”
Keane then added that Stones needed to show “more urgency” in the advanced positions he was taking up.
Attention then turned to Bellingham, back in the squad and starting lineup.
“I think he needs to do a bit more,” Keane claimed. “We know he is a brilliant player and his qualities, there was a few moments going back, OK he’s doing a team job, getting tackles in, but it’s about what he can do in possession.
“And I am looking at it and wanting to see a little bit more. There was one or two moments where he was a little bit sloppy. You want him to get into those pockets, we know his quality, but just a touch more. He is a top player with high standards. He’s made a few mistakes but he doesn’t shy away from things. That’s all I can be critical of.”
