Firefighter rappels from bridge to save truck driver | US | News
In a daring rescue reminiscent of an action film, first responders saved a lorry driver whose vehicle was precariously hanging off a busy motorway.
The heart-stopping incident occurred around 6:25 a. m. when a commercial cargo lorry veered off a snowy West Virginia motorway, leaving the cab teetering on the edge of a bridge, nearly 100 feet above the ground.
Images from the scene depict the cab at an almost 90-degree angle, with the driver trapped inside for close to five hours.
Emergency services from the Hurricane Fire Department were called to the scene following reports of a motor vehicle collision on US Route 35 in Mason County.
Video footage of the crash paints a picture straight out of a Hollywood blockbuster, highlighting the terrifying depth of the potential fall from the bridge.
The rescue operation involved a coordinated effort from local and county emergency services who shut down the motorway. They then strategically deployed multiple fire engines and emergency management vehicles to set up for the rescue mission.
As per local first responders, technicians from several departments set up three rope systems using two heavy recovery lorries. One lorry served as an anchor to the bridge, while the other secured the teetering cargo-laden lorry, preventing it from plunging to the ground below, according to the New York Post.
Emergency vehicles were strategically positioned to initiate a rope rescue.
Amidst the harsh winter conditions, Hurricane Fire Department volunteer firefighter Westley Quinn was lowered from the bridge into the lorry cab, where he secured the driver with a harness.
Social media footage documented the dramatic rescue, showing Quinn strapped to the driver as both men were gradually winched to safety through the driving snow.
Mason County Commission President Rick Handley confirmed that multiple local fire brigades courageously participated in the life-saving operation, including crews from Hurricane, Point Pleasant, Winfield, Buffalo, St. Albans, Nitro, and Teays Valley.
This incident follows weekend chaos as winter conditions triggered a massive multi-vehicle collision involving dozens of cars on an Indiana motorway, according to authorities.
The 45-vehicle pile-up unfolded on the westbound carriageway of I-70 near Terre Haute on Saturday, as confirmed by Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Matt Ames in an email to PEOPLE.
Remarkably, Ames reported no casualties from the incident.
The collision occurred shortly before 10 a. m. local time during heavy snowfall, with Ames revealing in a Saturday Facebook Live broadcast that officers were already dealing with “several slide-offs” and accidents along I-70.
