Female backpacker gets awkward surprise on overnight Cambodian bus | Travel News | Travel
A female backpacker from Australia got an awkward surprise during a recent ride on a sleeper bus in Cambodia.
If you’re currently out on a backpacking adventure or wanting to travel on a budget, then taking bus and train rides during a night is a great option, as it’s generally cheaper than day-time travel and also offers you a place to sleep for the night without any extra costs.
However, how far are you really willing to go in order to save some money? This is some thing one solo backpacker had to ask herself as she realised she was expected to share a small double bed with a stranger on a recent bus ride in Cambodia.
Eden Kelly, 26, from Australia took to Instagram to share the moment she boared a bus in the Asian country, only to be met with an unexpected bed mate already laying in the bed they were supposed to share with each other.
“10.5 hrs on a sleeper bus being paired with a total stranger in a SMALL double bed,” she wrote in the caption of the post.
“Literally that’s what you share with someone,” Eden said at the start of the video, where she showed the small double beds in question. “And because I’m travelling solo, I share with a random [person]. Don’t know what gender, don’t know who they are.”
In the next clip, Eden went on to show a man laying in the bed, excitedly waving hi to the camera. Eden was then seen having joined the man in the small bed, sitting up while he was laying down.
Eden went on to say that this was ‘one of the most awkward’ situations that she’d ever experienced in her lifetime, as she continued to laugh due to her discomfort.
She then realised that a British couple she’d encountered earlier on her travels were in a bunkbed close to her one, so she soon moved to go talk to them in order to avoid the awkwardness of sharing a bed with a stranger.
As she got back to her bed, she realised that her supposed bed mate had requested to move beds, leaving Eden alone in her bed, much to her dismay.
“I’m offended, a little bit sad, but it’s fine because now I get a whole bed to myself,” Eden told her viewers.
People quickly took to the comment section to share their thoughts on the matter, with many wondering why the man from the British couple hadn’t offered to switch beds with Eden, as she was clearly uncomfortable.
“Why didn’t you stay with your female friend and your male friend go with a stranger?” one person asked.
To this,Eden went on to explain: “Hi all, I met them (the British couple) on a tour 12 hours before getting the bus. I might’ve ended up being a girlfriend snatcher. They did not AT ALL need to offer to swap beds as I was pretty much a stranger to them too!!! Xx”
A second person went on to say: “I would’ve booked 2 spots, ain’t NO WAY I’d share an overnight bus and a bed with a stranger.”
However, someone else went on to argue: “If someone came to the spot next to me constantly recording, including putting me on their video. I wouldn’t feel great about that, glad he could be more comfortable somewhere else.”
