Fans back emotional Martin Lewis after Kemi Badenoch row backlash | Personal Finance | Finance

Martin Lewis has received an outpouring of support from his followers following an emotional admission on social media. The popular money-saving expert has dominated headlines this week after gatecrashing an interview with Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.

Ms Badenoch was being quizzed about student loans on ITV’s Good Morning Britain when Mr Lewis chose to intervene uninvited, challenging her policies. What ensued was a heated exchange, with Mr Lewis strongly disagreeing with the Tory leader.

Mr Lewis subsequently apologised for his behaviour, whilst Ms Badenoch stated she would ‘genuinely love’ to appear on his programme to debate the issue further. On Friday evening, Mr Lewis confessed it had been a tough week.

He described it as not his ‘finest one’, and acknowledged his admiration for politicians and their capacity to withstand relentless criticism and public scrutiny.

Mr Lewis wrote on X: “Delighted to close the door on this week, not my finest one. I can’t understand (and am envious of) how politicians can cope with flak so easily, my skin is far too thin. I’ll see you all Monday. I hope you have a good one.”

Nevertheless, scores of Mr Lewis’ supporters insisted he had absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about, with one commenting: “If it’s any consolation, you’ve gone up in my estimation. You apologised for interrupting an interview (when many wouldn’t) and then engaged with said interviewee to try and tackle an issue you both clearly care about, even if you do disagree over the mechanics of how.”

Another wrote: “Why not your finest one Martin? I’m more than happy with how you conducted yourself. If you were a politician, you’d walk it. A million percent more trustworrhy caring and real than any politician.”

One commented: “Don’t apologise, politicians are there to be called out, not just by their opposing parties, and not just behind ‘closed doors’. You’ve probably given us more valid advice and help than all them put together.”

Another remarked: “Most sensible people will understand and appreciate your words on GMTV earlier this week. There are far too many out there way too quick to criticise literally anything and anyone at every opportunity. Put it behind you and enjoy your weekend.”

A final message read: “Take a breath and a knee, the regroup. Ur helping so many people daily, but don’t forget to look after yourself.”
