Ex-England captain denied Gabba entry before England vs Australia Test | Cricket | Sport

Former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain’s troubled history at the Gabba continued after the 57-year-old was refused entry before the second Test match against Australia. The Sky Sports pundit arrived in Brisbane to cover the Ashes but encountered problems with his accreditation at the ground.

Whilst ex-England skipper Michael Atherton gained entry without difficulty, Hussain found himself locked out. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “They (ground staff) wouldn’t let me in. I mean for everything I’ve done for Australian cricket, at this particular ground (I couldn’t believe it).

“I turned up, showed my accreditation, they wouldn’t let me in, and then about half an hour later, Cricket Australia kindly came down and sorted out my accreditation.”

However, the mishaps didn’t end there for the former England leaders, as an evacuation order followed shortly after they finally entered the venue.

“The moment I got in, we all got kicked out again. There was a fire alarm and fire engines and everything,” Hussain said.

An outdoor kitchen smoke detector triggered the alarm, prompting fire crews to race to the stadium, whilst media personnel and staff were seen congregating outside following the evacuation.

The Gabba has proved an unlucky venue for Hussain over the years, most notably during the 2002 Ashes series. Hussain’s decision to bowl first in sweltering conditions backfired spectacularly as Australia amassed a mammoth first-innings total of 492, cruising to a commanding victory.

The incident is one that Hussain can now chuckle about, with Aussie fans never missing an opportunity to remind him of the ill-fated choice, while England supporters have endeavoured to erase it from their collective memory.

England haven’t tasted Test match success in Brisbane since 1986 and are predicted to struggle once more. This forecast seemed accurate when Mitchell Starc claimed two early wickets in just nine deliveries.

Despite being reduced to 5-2, England rallied thanks to solid innings from Zak Crawley and Joe Root who contributed 117 runs.
