Everything that’s on the menu in new Wetherspoons that opened in Spain | Travel News | Travel
Anyone who has ever been to Benidorm knows that it’s the British food capital of Continental Europe.
I was there to witness the first customers come through the door and the first paying customer, Daz Sunderland, enjoy a pint of lager. Named Castell de Santa Bàrbera after a nearby mountain fort, the pub has a few nods towards its Spanish hosts, such as a menu printed in both Spanish and English, a ‘Spanish tortilla’ dish, and staff that flit easily between the two languages.
But, overall, it is overwhelmingly a British outfit. The bulk of the menu is classic British grub, served up alongside pints of Stella and tins of Old Speckled Hen. Here’s a selection (in euros) of what you can get.
Beer
There are five beers on tap. As Spoons is a little smaller than the ones you’d normally find on the UK high street, it is limited to how many taps it can have. That means no ale, only lager. Which makes sense, given how warm it typically is in Alicante. The draft options are:
- Cruzcampo Especial 4.95
- Amstel Original 5.95
- Stella Artois 5.95
- Guinness 7.50
- Leffe Blonde 7.95
Wine
In what other airport can you get a glass of wine for just a touch over £3? I’d wager that you’d be hard pressed to find a cheaper 125ml of the grapey stuff anywhere else in Europe:
- Viña Lobera Verdejo Ecológico 3.65
- Cune Rueda 4.95
- Viña Real Rosado 6.75
Mixers
When it comes to spirits and mixers, Spanish Spoons has a fixed-price system (aside from a few fancier options). It charges €6.95 for 25ml and a mixer, €9.95 for a double measure:
- Beverly peach liqueur
- Disaronno amaretto
- Malibu
- Southern Comfort
- Gordon’s
- Gordon’s Pink Gin
- Tanqueray
- Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla
- Bacardi Carta Blanca
- Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold
When it comes to drinks, there is one glaring omission. The bar won’t give punters free glasses of water; instead, staff instruct them to order bottles.
Food
If you love Spoons’ food, then you’re in luck. The menu has a few Spanish additions, but mostly, it’s recognisable British food classics. Here’s a selection of what you can order.
