Europe’s sunniest beach in winter has 22C heat this week | Travel News | Travel

Europe’s sunniest beach during winter has been revealed, and it’s surprisingly affordable to visit. Spain’s Playa de Maspalomas has clinched the top spot, basking in an average of just over 10 hours of sunshine per day – ideal for escaping the winter gloom. By some estimates, the expansive beach stretches for a staggering 7.5 miles along the coast.

The golden-sanded beach is famed for its breathtaking dunes, which form part of the protected Maspalomas Natural Dune Reserve. Walkers, surfers and naturists all coexist on this beach, which also boasts secluded areas for nude bathing. The iconic Maspalomas Lighthouse was constructed in 1861, it once served as an essential guide for steamboats navigating routes between Europe, Africa, and America, reports the Mirror.

Nowadays, the lighthouse signifies the start of a bustling seaside promenade. A short distance from the beach lies the Maspalomas Palm Tree Plantation, a safeguarded natural space that serves as a resting place for birds migrating from Europe to Africa. Strolling through its palm-lined paths provides a refreshing change after a day soaking up the sun.

From above, the striking beach resembles an extraterrestrial landscape. The way its orange sand ripples and twists across vast hills is unlike anything else you’ll find in Europe. Saga named it the Continent’s sunniest winter beach, having compiled a list of the beaches that receive the most hours of sunshine during the winter months.

Playa de Maspalomas, located on the southern coast of the Canary Island of Gran Canaria, offers not only sunshine during winter months but genuinely warm temperatures too. The island has reached 22C today and forecasters predict these conditions will persist throughout the week.

The beach enjoys an excellent reputation on TripAdvisor, where it has garnered thousands of favourable reviews. One visitor commented: “Enjoyable especially in the early morning and at sunset, when the sun seems to play with the ocean waves and golden sand dunes giving unique and always new views.”

Another reviewer remarked: “One of the most beautiful beaches in Gran Canaria. Super extensive and the dune landscape is unique. The beach as well as the water are always super clean. We love coming here.”

For those considering escaping Britain’s dreary weather for some seaside sunshine, Gran Canaria proves both accessible and affordable. The most economical direct flight this week costs just £24 with Ryanair departing from Edinburgh Airport.

Later this month, one-way tickets are available from as little as £13.

Direct flights this month also operate from Bristol, Manchester, Bournemouth, Belfast, Newcastle, Liverpool, Nottingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Cardiff and Exeter airports.
