Italy is home to some of the most beautiful places in Europe, with cities packed full of history, culture and incredible coastal views. But many of the most popular spots can be expensive to get to, and once you arrive, you’ll often find yourself battling through crowds of tourists. Luckily, there are still parts of the country that offer the exact opposite experience.

These quieter destinations are often described as hidden gems, with fewer crowds, lower prices and a more authentic feel. For travellers looking to escape the busy hotspots, these places can offer the same stunning scenery without the chaos. And one particular seaside city is starting to get more attention, with some visitors even calling it the “prettiest” in Europe. It also comes with another big advantage, as direct flights from the UK cost as little as £15 in April and May.

So if you’re after a cheap and peaceful getaway, this could be one of the best options right now.

That city is Ancona, a historic port city on Italy’s eastern coast and the capital of the Marche region.

Ancona sits on a promontory that curves out into the Adriatic Sea, making it one of the few places in Italy where you can see both the sunrise and the sunset over the water.

It is located around 174 miles (280km) northeast of Rome and overlooks one of the most important natural harbours in the Adriatic.

Many people visit Ancona for its authentic Italian atmosphere, far removed from the busy streets of places like Venice or Rome.

It also acts as a gateway to the Riviera del Conero, a stretch of coastline known for its white cliffs and clear turquoise water.

The city itself is packed with history, having been founded by Greek settlers from Syracuse in 387 BC.

It later developed through Roman, Byzantine and medieval periods, leaving behind a mix of architecture and landmarks.

One of the standout sights is San Ciriaco Cathedral, a 12th-century Romanesque building that sits on top of Monte Guasco and offers wide views across the city and sea.

The Arch of Trajan, built in 115 AD, is another popular landmark. Visitors also often head to the Mole Vanvitelliana, which is a large pentagonal structure built on an artificial island in the harbour.

Tourists can also head to Piazza del Plebiscito, the heart of the city, or explore Passetto Beach, which is famous for its colourful caves carved into the rock by fishermen.

Flights to Ancona are available directly from London Stansted with Ryanair, with the journey taking around two hours and 15 minutes.

Another added: “Just got back and wow. If you hate fighting through crowds of tourists, just go to Ancona. It’s so chill. We walked through the main squares, and it was just locals living their lives. Super charming, super quiet, and actually feels like the real Italy. No selfie sticks in your face here lol.”
