One European city has been named ‘most underrated’ in the continent and flights from the UK to this city are currently just £38. The capital city is just a three hour and 10-minute flight away from London and has nearly 24-hour daylight during the summer.

Helsinki is Finland’s capital and was labelled ‘most underrated’ in Europe by American YouTuber and entrepreneur, Peter Santenello. The capital offers a range of tourist activities like ferry rides, tram tours and park hikes and unique features like a floating sauna, alpaca farms and snowmobile tours.

Although it is is known for its icy temperatures at this time of the year, with an average minimum winter temperature of −7C, this results in the city’s transformation into a winter wonderland.

During its chilly time of year, visitors can choose from activities like ice skating in the city centre or warming up in the city’s Old Market Hall. For those wishing to visit in the summer, during Helsinki’s average highs of 21C to 23C, tourists can swim in the sea and embark on trips to nearby islands like Seurasaari Island or Pihlajasaari Island.

Seurasaari Island can be accessed via a bus trip over the bridge. The island comes alive during the summer, with traditional folk dances and bonfires.

Pihlajasaari Island is only a ten-minute boat ride from the mainland and offers sandy beaches, nature trails and a seasonal summer restaurant.

During the summer Helsinki’s theme park, Linnanmäki, offers free entry and also features over 50 aquariums, a theatre and four children’s play areas – ideal for families.

Finland is also home to various traditional dishes and pastries. Korvapuusti is a sweet cinnamon roll, roughly translating to ‘slapped ears’. Recent travellers recommend Rams Roasters and Café Succes for the city’s top spots to secure the cinnamon bun.

Other famous dishes include a creamy salmon soup, known locally as Lohikeitto and a reindeer stew called Poronkäristys, for the more culturally adventurous.

For drinks, while coffee doesn’t come from Finland, Finns drink more coffee than any other nation in the world. Top cafés in the capital include Cafetoria, Sävy and Café Noir.

Previous visitors advise that the best time to go to Helsinki is between the spring and summer, between the months of May and September. Nevertheless, the city is a year-round destination, offering seasonal attractions and cultural events.

While British tourists can also reach the capital city from airports in Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham and Nottingham, the flights require at least one stop and currently cost almost four times the price as the London flights currently on offer.
