European village built on 23 waterfalls is ‘heavenly’ place | Europe | Travel

If you want to visit a travel destination that looks like something straight out of a storybook, this one could be for you.

Water cascades through the village of Rastoke in Croatia, thanks to rivers which flow through homes and under quaint wooden bridges.

The water comes from rivers Slunjcica and Korana, and has led to the formation of around 23 miniature waterfalls nestled among the buildings.

The town, thanks to its extraordinary natural beauty and historic century-old mills, falls under the protection of the State Directorate for Cultural and historical heritage

It is known for its water-powered mechanical mills – 22 mills of which are contained at its peak. Rastoke is also famous for its attractive architecture, with unique combination of 17th-19th century style buildings.

As well as being a beautiful tucked away tourist destination today, the village also has historic significance.

Due to its positioning by a main road, it has acted as a hub for all sorts of trading, including various buyers, dealers and livestock traders.

At one point, the town was severely damaged, during the Homeland War in the 1990s.

However, it was renovated and bought back to its former glory, with the help of Croatian Ministry of Development and Reconstruction.

There are now around 30 households here, who are planning to renew the water mills and make them into businesses.

Visitors from all around the world have flocked to enjoy the village’s tranquil waterfalls, with one TripAdvisor reviewer calling it a “wonderful blend of buildings and nature”.

Another user said that they discovered it 20 years ago and have been enchanted by it ever since. They gushed: “One of our favourite places in the world.”

And a third added: “Absolutely charming and with numerous bubbling steams flowing through it. We were also lucky enough to see a tightrope walker on a wire along the river. If you’re in the vicinity definitely worth a stop.”

Meanwhile, Instagram account official_fabtrip recently shared a video of the town, stating that: “If heaven had a village, this would be it.”

Judging by the pictures taken at the swoonworthy destination, we’d have to agree!
