The capital of one European city is often overlooked but it’s a thriving destination that offers an exciting trip for tourists. Belgrade, in Serbia, is not a major tourist destination in comparison to some of Europe’s other cities such as Paris and Barcelona, yet it’s one that should be on your list to visit.

On a travel blog called Grumpy Camel, the city has been named as one of the best crowd-free spots to visit in Europe. On the blog, it says: “Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia, sits at the meeting of the Danube and Sava Rivers. This city promises a unique culture, affordable prices, delicious food and warm people – without all of the crowds.”

The small city balances history with modernity – there’s a perfect blend of stunning architecture and museums alongside modern cafes, bars and restaurants.

On another blog called Lotus Eaters Travel, it says: “It is perhaps a cliche to say this, but Belgrade is somewhat of an underrated city.

“Most travellers looking for a mini-break in Europe might head to Budapest, Berlin or even Bratislava before they think about Belgrade.”

If you’re wondering what to do while you’re there, one must-see place is the Church of Saint Sava.

It is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world – well-known for its huge gold-accented crypt and towering white marble exterior.

The 20th-century landmark dominates the Vracar Plateau, drawing thousands of tourists and worshippers annually with its enormous 70-meter central dome.

You can typically spend one or two hours exploring its immense interior, which features an ongoing mosaic project covering 1,248 square meters – one of the world’s largest curved surface mosaics.

Another must-visit spot for nature lovers is Kalemegdan park which serves as the historic heart of the city and offers panoramic views of the river.

One person who visited on Tripadvisor said: “The park had everything. Activities, programs, souvenir shops and a playground.

“Just within its vicinity is the fortress near the river. It is also close to the castle square and the old town.”
