One critique applauded the picture, stating: “It was an incredibly beautiful and artistically enigmatic film, but I must admit there were a lot of times when I was confused about the story and the characters.
“Overall, it was a really mind-boggling movie, and it has an amazing visual atmosphere. I definitely recommend it for mystery and drama fans.”
Another commented: “Just wow! This movie blew me away, didn’t expect it.” A third remarked: “Enemy is a painstakingly made movie by Villeneuve, from the visuals to story. A simple story with layered symbolism and meaning that questions the viewer at each watch.”
A fourth viewer said: “Stunning film. A wonderful mixture of Godard, Clouzot, Fellini and a touch of Hitchcock. Stylish without being shallow, an English language film with a European sensibility.
“I have never seen Toronto look so impressive yet intimidating. Jake Gyllenhaal commands this film with charm, vulnerability and grace, a showcase for the immensely talented actor he is.
“So annoyed I missed this on release, but now I have seen it and it’s a film I will watch again and again to get all the nuances. A masterpiece from the powerhouse talent that is Villeneuve. Impeccable.”
A fifth viewer stated: “Enemy is an amazing film. It’s full of a dread that looms over everything, stunning bleak and yellow cinematography, some of the best dialogue I’ve ever heard in a film, and phenomenal duel performances from Jake Gyllenhaal.
“Enemy is a haunting analysis of guilt and identify that sticks with you for days or weeks after the ending. A film that could be thought of as an hour-and-a-half-long jump scare; Enemy is a film that will be thought about and analysed for years to come.”
One five-star review noted: “Watched it for a second time after a long time. Have to say that it has an unique vibe and ambient, really stayed with me. You can interpret it in different ways – the type of movies that I love.”
Enemy is now available to watch on ITVX.
