If you’re fed up with the rain and looking for a place to warm up in March, the perfect destination might be closer than you think.

Cyprus is just a four-and-a-half hour flight from the UK, and many budget carriers operate flights to the island, making it easy to grab an affordable ticket during the spring. Ryanair offer flights from Birmingham to Paphos from just £21 each way in March, or you can depart from London Stansted with flights beginning at £30 one way.

Better still, it enjoys temperatures of up to 20C in March, and only five to seven days of rain, with showers tending to be short. It’s a far cry from the deluge currently hitting the UK. Next week’s forecast for Cyprus sees highs of 18-19C and only two days where it’ll be hit by showers. 

Cyprus boasts 300 days of sunshine annually, and is especially stunning in early spring when the flora comes into bloom. The brief flight duration makes it perfect for short getaways and families travelling with children, and it offers plenty of family-orientated accommodation.

Visitors to the island outside of peak season can explore its cultural landmarks, ancient monuments, and walking routes, and with reduced visitor numbers, you’re far less likely to encounter lengthy queues or have to compete for those magnificent views. Among the island’s best-known destinations is Ayia Napa, famed for its wild nightlife scene throughout the summer season. 

In the spring, things are considerably calmer, with the major nightclubs closed, though several local bars remain open until late. It’s an ideal time to explore if you prefer a more peaceful, authentic atmosphere.

The Troodos Mountains make an excellent spring destination when tourist numbers are low. Travellers can trek through stunning landscapes, or discover the charming village and monastery tucked within the mountain terrain.

Whilst exploring the mountains, sample the local fortified dessert wine known as commandaria. Many residents sell bottles from their homes for just a few Euros.

March is an ideal month to explore some of Cyprus’s most famous landmarks, as visitor numbers will be lower than the summer months. Head to Aphrodite’s Rock or the Tombs of the Kings, discover a turtle conservation centre, or embark on a day trip to Akamas Peninsula National Park on the western coastline, celebrated for its stunning golden sandy coves.
