‘Endearing’ Netflix festive film is ‘breath of fresh air’ | Films | Entertainment

A 2019 romantic comedy set around Christmas and the festive period is being hailed as a ‘teen version of Love Actually’.

The film, described by viewers as ‘heartwarming, fun, and exciting’, is currently available to stream on Netflix.

Directed by Luke Snellin with a screenplay penned by Kay Cannon, Victoria Strouse and Laura Solon, Let It Snow is a festive rom-com adapted from the young adult novel Let it Snow: Three Holiday Romances authored by John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Myracle.

The film was first released on November 8, 2019, dropping straight onto the streaming giant’s online platform.

The film charts the story of Christmas Eve in a small Illinois town, where a massive snowstorm has left multiple teens stranded and disrupted their holiday plans, leading to the sparking of unexpected romances.

On one hand Julie connects with pop star Stuart after returning his phone back to him on a stalled train, while diner worker Dorrie navigates their crushes amid the inevitable holiday chaos and Tobin confesses his feelings for his best friend Angie.

Starring Isabela Merced, Shameik Moore, Odeya Rush, Liv Hewson, Kiernan Shipka, Mitchell Hope, Matthew Noszka, and Jacob Batalon, Let It Snow has garnered positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

With an 85 per cent critics approval rating on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, the film received glowing reviews, with one critic writing: “You’re likely to have an endearing cinematic experience because Let It Snow is all about the feels. And that, is something that hits the mark for everyone, regardless of how old you are.”

The movie’s queer storylines have been hailed a refreshing change, with one reviewer saying: “Compared to the usual Hallmark-dominated landscape of straight-up straight, white, and boring holiday movies, this does feel like a breath of fresh air.”

Another critic commented: “What a gift that for once, queer women and non-binary people are invited to the holiday party.”

While a fourth reviewer hailed it a teen version of Love Actually, writing: “Doesn’t have the megawatt star power and its issues aren’t quite as heavy and widespread, but it makes for an entertaining teen-lite version of Love Actually.”

Audiences were equally thrilled with the film, as one fan wrote: “I rewatch this movie every holiday season. If you love a heartwarming Christmas comedy romance (Love Actually, The Last Holiday), this movie is for you! Keep in mind the cast is high school age.”

Another happy viewer said of the film: “Fun, heartwarming, sweet, sad, exciting — all of the above! This is one of my favorites to watch during Christmas season. The storylines are great and the music is top notch. I love the actors and all the little details. If you’re looking for a coming of age film with holiday themes that are little on the romance, give this one a watch!”

While one fan wrote: “Really enjoyed this movie. It’s cute and sweet and everything a romcom should be without going off the rails. It’s a refreshing slice-of-life holiday movie.”
