A young woman who leapt from a fifth-floor window following a horrific sexual assault has been granted permission to undergo euthanasia.
25 year old Noelia Castillo Ramos, who is now paraplegic, will be euthanised tomorrow. In an interview just days before her death, she said she simply wanted to “leave in peace” after years of pain and suffering. The young woman from Barcelona was given approval by the European Court of Human Rights and the Constitutional Court in Spain.
Ramos sustained a severe spinal cord injury after attempting to jump to her death from a fifth-floor window. Her parents have been attempting to intervene for several years and prevent their daughter from making the irreversible decision.
According to them, Ramos suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder. She experienced different stages of her life under institutional care, and was “relying on … the Spanish mental healthcare system” before she was raped.
In 2022, Ramos was residing in a state-supervised centre for vulnerable youth when she was brutally gang raped. The incident left her severely traumatised, compounding her already existing mental health difficulties.

Struggling to manage the effects of the assault, Ramos attempted to take her own life by jumping from a building. She survived the fall but was left paralysed from the waist down. Since then, she has endured relentless physical pain and severe disability, according to reports. Moreover, her mental health has deteriorated, with depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and borderline personality disorder.
In February 2026, Spain’s Constitutional Court dismissed her father’s appeal, asserting there was “no violation of fundamental rights” and that the euthanasia could proceed.
Spain’s Constitutional Court decided to approve her request for euthanasia, overruling her father’s appeal, and maintaining there was “no violation of fundamental rights” and that the euthanasia could be carried out.
The appeal was upheld due to the Organic Law on the Regulation of Euthanasia of 2021. This law permitted euthanasia in instances of serious and enduring suffering. Since its enactment, hundreds have sought help in ending their lives.

Ramos’ mother, Yolanda Ramos, spoke to the media, “I do not agree, but I will always be by her side.”
In a conversation just four days prior to her passing, the 25 year old affirmed she never harboured any doubts about the procedure, stating, “I was very clear about it from the beginning.
“None of my family is in favour of euthanasia. Obviously, because I’m another pillar of the family. I’m leaving, and you’re staying here with all the pain. But I think, all the pain I’ve suffered over the years… I just want to leave in peace now and stop suffering, full stop.
“And a father’s, or a mother’s, or a sister’s happiness doesn’t have to come before a daughter’s happiness or sadness of a daughter’s life.”
