Emma Raducanu issues six-word statement after US Open exit with her mood clear | Tennis | Sport

Emma Raducanu has offered her verdict on her summer after being dumped out of the US Open at the end of last week. The Briton progressed to the third round at Flushing Meadows after reaching the same stage at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Raducanu arrived at the US Open after winning two matches at the All England Club in July. And the 22-year-old began her Flushing Meadows campaign with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ena Shibahara. She then thrashed Janice Tjen 6-2, 6-1 in her second match to set up a showdown with Elena Rybakina. But Raducanu struggled to match Rybakina as the 2022 Wimbledon champion triumphed 6-1, 6-2.

On Sunday night, Raducanu shared a photo dump from her time in New York with her followers on Instagram. She could be seen alongside friends, eating in restaurants and lying on a bed getting some well-earned rest.

And Raducanu captioned the post by writing: “A productive summer. Progress over perfection.” She has been aiming to return to the higher echelons of tennis after struggling to reach the business end of Grand Slams in recent years amid a string of injury issues.

The talented ace hit the headlines when she lifted the US Open trophy in 2021 as an 18-year-old. And she clearly feels she is moving in the right direction if her Instagram caption is anything to go by.

“I think when the very top players play against me, they have a point to prove that they’re at the top, and they’re there for a reason,” Raducanu said following her US Open exit. “I think every time I’ve played one, they’ve kind of shown that.

“So while I’m improving, doing better, gaining maybe some more respect around, I think the top have definitely raised their game.”

And discussing the improvements she needs to make, she explained: “Developing my serve is important – it has got better but I think it can be even better.

“The ball after the serve as well, so I’m ready for a fast return, that’s where I have some big work to do. Once I’m in the rally I feel okay but against Elena I barely felt I was in a rally. Starting the point is extremely important at that level.”

She added: “I can play top opponents in the first, second, or third round. So I’ve just got to do my best in the next few months until Australia to just keep working to try and close the gap.”
