Elder Scrolls fans have just 3 months left to play this game | Gaming | Entertainment
Fans of The Elder Scrolls have just a few months left to play one of Bethesda’s least talked about entries in the series as The Elder Scrolls: Blades is set to shut down in June this year.
Blades was released in 2019 as a free-to-play mobile game, with a Nintendo Switch port later arriving in 2020. It used simplified touchscreen controls and allowed players to explore a town and its surrounding area in the region of Cyrodil.
It was set between the events of Oblivion and Skyrim, although its story had very little to do with either of those games.
The gameplay loop revolved around delving into dungeons, battling monsters and gathering loot to be traded for better gear. There was also a settlement building mechanic with buildings in the hub village available to purchase and upgrade.
Later updates added new features like PvP battles.
Despite being free-to-play, The Elder Scrolls Blades never really found its audience, largely down to how well it was received critically. It currently sits with a score of 42% on MetaCritic, and a 2.8 user score.
As Blades is technically a live service game and requires an internet connection to play, it’s impossible to access the game offline. With so few players still logging in, Bethesda is set to pull the plug later this year with June 30, 2026 pencilled in as its last day.
In fact, only those who already have the game downloaded can currently access it. The Elder Scrolls Blades has now been delisted from the iOS App Store, Google Play Store and Nintendo eShop.
If you are lucky – or unlucky – enough to still have The Elder Scrolls Blades installed, Bethesda has updated it so that all items in the store can be purchased with a single piece of currency. So, if you’re the one person who’s dreamed of owning all the cosmetic items on offer in Blades, now’s your time to shine.
While this might be disappointing news for diehard Elder Scrolls fans, we’re hoping to be hearing more about The Elder Scrolls 6 soon. Bethesda’s Todd Howard recently confirmed that the team is full steam ahead on the project with sections of the game already in a playable state.
Bethesda recently announced a huge update for Starfield, with Howard explaining at the time that new engine enhancements would also carry over to Creation Engine 3, which is powering the next generation of Elder Scrolls.
It’s looking like we’re going to have been waiting an entire decade between the announcement of The Elder Scrolls 6 and its release, but as the saying goes – good things come to those who wait.
