Donald Trump made lengthy remarks upon Sir Keir Starmer‘s arrival in Scotland, but no one could hear him over a chorus of bagpipes. The two leaders met at the US president’s Turnberry resort in South Ayrshire for a bilateral meeting expected to touch on topics such as trade and the crisis in Gaza.

Before the meeting, the pair made comments outside the grand building, only to be drowned out by bagpipes marking the important ocassion. It’s not clear what the Republican said, but he went on to discuss starvation in Gaza, admitting that there are “a lot of starving people”. He called for “other nations” to “step up” and claimed EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told him that European nations would “substantially step up” their support.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is “one of the main reasons” for the meeting. Mr Trump said: “We’re very much involved and I think that’s one of the main reasons for our meeting.”

He said the US has “given a lot of money” and food to Gaza, but claimed Hamas has stolen much of it. The US president also had a rare disagreement with Benjamin Netanyahu, who maintains that people in Gaza are not starving.

When asked if he agreed with the Israeli prime minister, Mr Trump responded: “I mean based on television, I would say not particularly because those children look very hungry.”

Sir Keir interjected at this point, calling the situation in the city an “absolute catastrophe”. He said: “It’s a humanitarian crisis. It’s an absolute catastrophe. I think people in Britain are revolted in seeing what they’re seeing on their screens.”

Sir Keir and Mr Trump also discussed immigration after the US president was asked what the UK should do about small boat crossings.

The prime minister explained the situation, saying the Government must stop “people coming over the channel who shouldn’t be here”.

Mr Trump changed the subject slightly, taking it as an opportunity to discuss his own immigration policy and boast that no-one has come into the US illegally in the last month.

He did, however, praise Sir Keir for his stance against illegal immigration, despite admitting he knows “nothing about the boats”.

The US president added: “If you’re stopping immigration and stopping the wrong people, my hats are off to you.”
