Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin’s call in full as 5 key Ukraine agreements struck | World | News
Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin have finished their phone call and agreed on a number of conditions for a “limited” ceasefire. The leaders spoke for an hour and a half during the call that began at around 2pm UK time.
Following the call, Moscow said that Putin and Trump agreed on “normalising relations” between Russia and the US. They also confirmed that a prisoner swap between Moscow and Kyiv was agreed. It will see 175 prisoners of war swapped on each side, as well as Moscow handing over 23 wounded Ukrainian soldiers.
Putin also reportedly agreed to stop strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. According to Russian state media, the dictator has ordered the military to stop strikes on those targets for 30 days.
Meanwhile, the White House has issued a readout following the phone call. They outlined four other key agreements that the leaders discussed.
Ceasefire
The White House said: “The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace.”
When and where negotiations will take place
The White House said: “These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East. The leaders spoke broadly about the Middle East as a region of potential cooperation to prevent future conflicts.”
The use of ‘strategic’ weapons
The White House said: “They further discussed the need to stop proliferation of strategic weapons and will engage with others to ensure the broadest possible application.”
US and Russia relationship
The White House said: “The two leaders agreed that a future with an improved bilateral relationship between the United States and Russia has huge upside. This includes enormous economic deals and geopolitical stability when peace has been achieved.”
