Cruise passengers warned to avoid 1 type of cabin if they struggle to sleep | Travel News | Travel
There are many types of rooms on a cruise ship, some of which involve having access to a balcony, and some of which don’t. The balcony rooms are often much more expensive as they give guests a chance to relax in private whilst overlooking the ocean.
However, whilst this is great for some people, some guests should avoid booking this type of room, according to an expert. A mattress expert has shared her top tips for passengers concerned about getting quality sleep whilst at sea, including one key warning.
Rebecca Swain, a sleep and mattress specialist at Winston Beds, said: “If you’re new to cruises, then there could be a possibility that you’ll struggle to sleep the first couple of nights.
“Cruise ships are designed so that you feel as little movement as possible, but the thought of sleeping on open water for some people may affect how much rest they get.”
When booking a cruise, passengers are able to choose which cabin they want, and there are several factors to keep in mind when making that decision.
Balcony rooms are among the most expensive options, however, Rebecca suggested that those concerned about the open sea might want to avoid this.
She said: “Balcony rooms are gorgeous, but if the thought of sleeping on open water scares you, you’re best opting for an inside cabin so you can’t see the water late at night.”
If the thought of not having any view outside scares you, you can often opt for a window cabin, which can easily be covered if you don’t like looking out.
Rebecca also recommended ensuring your bed is as comfortable as possible to guarantee a good night’s sleep onboard.
She added: “It may sound obvious, but it’s worth asking the staff on board for extra pillows, blankets and a mattress topper if needed.”
Cruise staff can often accommodate these requests if you feel uncomfortable in order to make you as comfortable as possible.
Rebecca continued: “Although the movement on large ships is minimal, it’s important to give yourself a night or two to get used to your new sleeping space.”
In order to help sleep better, it might also be worth avoiding rooms on decks which have bars, entertainment and shops.
This is because they often stay open quite late at night, and this could interfere with a good night’s sleep.
