Heavy snow has fallen in Tenerife with all access roads to a popular landmark closed due to weather conditions.

Weather alerts had been issued earlier this week but adverse weather conditions have persisted on the island. 

Now the Tenerife Cabildo has announced the closure of all access roads to Teide National Park due to adverse weather conditions, reports Canarian Weekly.

Snow and ice on the roads has made driving hazardous and the closures will remain in effect until conditions are deemed safe for travel.

The closed routes include the TF-21 from La Orotava, the TF-24 from La Esperanza, and the TF-38 from Chío. 

These closures are necessary to ensure the safety of drivers and visitors to the park.

Rosa Dávila, the president of the Cabildo, remarked on the beauty of the snow-covered Teide, describing it as a “Christmas gift” for the people of Tenerife and the Canary Islands. 

She said: “This picturesque scene reminds us of the island’s unique charm, but also highlights the importance of preserving its environment and acting responsibly.”

Blanca Pérez, the councillor for Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, urged residents and visitors to adhere to the restrictions. 

She said: “Our priority is everyone’s safety. It’s crucial to follow the guidelines provided by the authorities and avoid unnecessary travel to the area until conditions improve.”

Those in the area have been advised to avoid traveling to Teide National Park while the closures are in place.

They have also been told to stay updated on road conditions through the Cabildo’s Road Information Centre and exercise caution in other parts of the island if adverse weather persists.

To prevent accidents, people in the area should follow signage and instructions from security personnel to prevent accidents.

This comes after schools were closed in Tenerife earlier this week with people told not to travel as ferocious 100 km/h winds from Storm Dorothea impact the popular holiday destination.
