Bruno Fernandes absence from Portugal squad explained after Man Utd injury fears | Football | Sport

Bruno Fernandes was conspicuously missing from Portugal’s squad in the crucial World Cup qualifier against Ireland on Thursday evening. Fears of a possible injury to the Manchester United skipper began to circulate on social media, but his absence is actually due to a suspension.

In the 2-2 draw with Hungary last month, the midfielder accumulated enough bookings to warrant a ban, rendering him unavailable for this match. No doubt, Fernandes will be frustrated at not being able to contribute to a game that could see Portugal secure their place in next summer’s tournament.

However, his non-participation could potentially benefit both Fernandes and United, especially after Portuguese media voiced concerns about him last month. Renascenca reported signs of “physical fatigue”.

Meanwhile, A Bola gave him a 6/10 rating, noting his limited influence on the game: “He hit the post once in the second half, but that was perhaps the only time he managed to find space in the central corridor. For this reason, he often appeared close to the line, especially on the left, but without gaining any influence.”

While there may be concerns about his physical condition given his extensive playtime, there are no worries about an actual muscular injury. His absence from tonight’s match was anticipated well in advance.

Ruben Amorim‘s deployment of Fernandes in a midfield role has become crucial for Manchester United’s ball progression and movement across the pitch. Despite his deeper position reducing his goal involvement, this trend is beginning to shift.

Fernandes has provided assists in three of United’s last four matches, against Tottenham, Nottingham Forest, and Liverpool. He also played a pivotal part in Bryan Mbeumo’s fourth goal against Brighton with a clever dummy before the Cameroon international netted his second in the 4-2 victory.

At Anfield, it was Fernandes’ excellent first-time cross that Harry Maguire converted, while Casemiro and Matthijs de Ligt both scored from Fernandes’ corners against Forest and Spurs respectively.

Despite missing the trip to Ireland, Fernandes will be keen to maintain his impressive form with Portugal, who face Armenia in a few days’ time – a match he will be available for.

This international fixture takes place eight days before United’s next match, a Monday night clash with Everton at Old Trafford on November 24. Games against Crystal Palace, West Ham United, Wolves and Bournemouth follow soon after.

Fernandes’ attacking prowess will undoubtedly be called upon during the festive period as Amorim’s team face Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Wolves and Leeds United, all without Amad and Mbeumo due to AFCON commitments.
